P. Craig Russell has spent the better part of his career finding ways to make the operas he love truly sing as sequential art. In that regard, his 2002 adaptation of Wagner's Ring cycle is his magnum opus. Fourteen issues, over 400 pages, newly collected in one hardcover by Dark Horse, "The Ring of the Nibelung" shows Russell at his best adapting the four operas to comics' strengths while avoiding its weaknesses. Mike & Greg take a look at not only "The Ring" but Russell's career in general, and particularly the influence of his days inking Mike Mignola. Find out what common ground is shared by diehard opera and anime fans, which Marvel story Russell drew twice, why the days of inkers are most likely numbered, who adapted the Ring cycle to comics before Russell, how he was able to so successfully translate Wagner from the stage to the page, and a lot more.

This week's episode swings the pendulum back in a more mainstream direction by taking aim at a Jim Starlin Big Two cosmic event book with an oddball collection of heroes and a Machiavellian manipulator at the center of things. "Infinity Gauntlet"? Nope! "Cosmic Odyssey"! To make things even better, Mike and Greg are joined on this journey into mystery by Multiversity Comics' own DC expert Brian Salvatore! The lads leave few, if any, stones unturned in this look back at the Prestige Format miniseries from 1988. Come for the Starlin talk, stay for the Mignola discussion and tons of other interesting tidbits, like what are each of our #fourcomics picks, which artist showed Brian that superheroes didn't have to fit a certain artistic mold, why Batman plays the whole "don't use guns" and "don't kill" things pretty fast and loose in this series, how his relationship with Superman should be handled, and who turns out to be the character most affected by this series.

The Man Without Fear is riding a new wave of popularity thanks to having a hit Netflix show under his belt, so Mike & Greg turn their heightened comic senses on one of, if not THE, seminal story about Matt Murdock: Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli's 'Born Again'. From singles to digital to trade paperback to Artist Edition, this story is a comic booking master class no matter the format you experience it in. Process is dissected, context is given, praise is assigned and heaped, and hearts are broken when one host describes the Artist Edition to the other. But the Hornhead talk doesn't end there! The Netflix show gets its due! Not a complete love fest, but pretty close! Listen on to find out the boys' theories on Madame Gao, what we could look forward to in Seasons 2 & 3, how seeing the show affects reading the comic, which Miller comics make the Holy Trinity of his bibliography (and why), who hears who in their head for which character, why 'Born Again'-type stories rarely work as well with other characters, and more.

From Mike’s recent foray to the Comics Art Brooklyn show last month to the recent shake-ups over at Marvel Comics, there’s a lot going on in this episode. What could Brian Michael Bendis’ DC future hold? What are the ups and down sides to C.B. Cebulski’s promotion to Editor-in-Chief at Marvel? What does Mike think is a good entry point to the works of Chris Ware? Today’s episode is the perfect way to sneak in a little slice of comics as you slip into that post-Thanksgiving dinner tryptophan coma.

This part of our monthly Previews two-parters is a little different, for two reasons. One: Mike is still flying solo. Two: the first premire publisher up for discussion this time around is Marvel. Instead of ending on the usual downbeat that is the general apathy our distiguished hosts feel towards The House of Ideas, this month we get that out of the way first. From there? Well, Mignola and Stenbeck kick off "Koshchei the Deathless," "Snagglepuss" enters stage right, and "Frankenstein Alive, Alive" is alive! Plus: questionable "Artists' Editions," delux reprints, all-ages comics and way more!

Emboldened by his solo run of Pull List episodes, Mike takes a crack at tackling this month's Previews catalog all by his lonesome. So what sorts of funny books await us in November's green section? How about a new "Strangers in Paradise" series? Will this 25th anniversary title finally get Mike to read this series? Enough with the questions, let's get declarative! There's a spiffy looking collection of Wally Wood and Jack Kirby's "Skymasters" on the horizon, as is a volume of classic Archie horror comics. Speaking of Archie, looks like their new series "Cosmo" might just fill the Sonic-shaped hole in their line up (and Mike's heart.) Then, of course, there's plenty of Fantagraphics love, particularly for that Shak Kane book they're coming to market with! All that and so much more await you in this week's episode!

After months of threatening and a few near-misses, we finally take a look at the manga/anime juggernaut that is Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira. But not just one version; all three! The B&W manga, the color Epic run from the late 1980’s, and the anime. 4200+ pages of comics (over the two versions) plus over 2 hours of anime have lead up to this discussion. We guarantee that you’ll come away from this episode having learned something about this work that you never knew. How do the different translations affect Otomo’s overall message? How can the anime be an entirely faithful adaptation and yet leave out vast chunks of story? What are the bosozoku? Who is the main character? Does color help or hurt this manga masterpiece? All this and so much more is waiting for you in our latest episode!

One of the perks of being part of the Multiversity podcasting family is it puts you in touch with group of people who really know their comics. Case in point: today's chat with writer Ram V about his upcoming Image series "Paradiso" came via a recommendation and introduction from Pop Culture Hound's Chris Thompson, and follows in the footsteps of Ram's appearance on Paul Lai's Comics Syllabus show. Paul's customary deep dive with Ram into "Paradiso"'s debut leaves Greg a blank canvas to draw on for his own talk. Hear what he comes up with, as well as what your favorite city might sound like if you bumped into them on the street, and much more on today's episode!

While the first name in British comics is undoubtedly "2000 AD", Greg recently got a chance to talk with a representative of the other big player in comics across the pond: Chris Thompson, Brand Manager for Titan Comics. For over 35 years, Titan has brought two different areas of books to its British audience: film & TV tie-ins, and graphic novels. Just this month sees the return of Jack Kirby & Joe Simon’s “Fighting American” and iconic science fiction hero Dan Dare, but also the launch of Statix Press, an initiative by the publisher to bring a diverse selection of European comics to English-speaking readers. In his role as Brand Manager, Chris is definitely THE person to talk to when it comes to Titan. But this being Robots, Greg also digs a little in Chris’ backstory and how he went from young comics reader to the Eisner-winning bon vivant you hear today (and on his Multiversity Comics podcast Pop Culture Hound.

(Note: This episode was recorded before the announcement of Titan acquiring the rights to publish comics based on the classic TV series The Prisoner.)

Charting Josh Dysart's career path in comics isn't easy. The writer has worked for a wide swath of publishers, from Dark Horse to Image to DC Comics to Vertigo to Valiant and points in-between, and gone where few other creators dare to tread, regardless of medium. Dysart has been all over the map, figuratively AND literally. So how do you pick just one topic to focus on when you get the chance to sit down with him? The answer to that question brings you today's episode: a chat that Greg had with Josh Dysart at this past weekend's Baltimore Comic Con.

They say nobody’s perfect, and that is certainly the case with Jaime Hernandez’s most popular creation Maggie. Over the last 30-plus years, he has shown us how flawed, and yet perfectly realized, a character she is. Mike and Greg catch up with Maggie in Hernandez’s latest graphic novel “The Love Bunglers” as she tries to find happiness with her on-again, off-again love interest Ray. The amount of story, craft, and emotion packed into this 110-page work is astounding, and the only thing keeping the guys from still talking about it is the fear of spoiling too much of this (or any other) year’s best comics. Whether you are a complete newcomer to Hernandez and his work, or have been following Maggie, Ray, Hopey, and the rest of the Love and Rockets cast for decades, this is a must-own book.

Sam Teer drops by this week to help Greg make heads or tails of Steve Gerber & Jack Kirby's "Destroyer Duck". Published by Eclipse Comics in the early 1980's, "Destroyer Duck" was a 5-issue satirical onslaught hatched to fund Gerber's legal dispute with Marvel Comics over the rights to Howard the Duck. Duke Duck takes up arms against Godcorp when the monolithic megacorporation kills his only-seen-in-shadow-but-obviously-Howard friend The Little Guy. But do these comics exact satisfying satirical revenge in a mighty marvelous manner? Or does too much creator bitterness make this work a lame duck in both creators' careers? And did Greg really just side with Marvel Comics??? All that and more as opinions and observations run amok in this week's episode!

Have the decades of Kirby clones and imitators made it harder for new fans to recognize the genius in Jack's work? What makes a successful interpretation of a Kirby property? Today we bring you one of the "Color Commentary" panels from this past weekend's HeroesCon 2017. Here's how the convention schedule described it:

With this year’s guest list boasting so many of comics’ best colorists, the biggest concern was fitting them all into one panel. Our solution? Have TWO! (The other is on SUNDAY!!!) Looking to demystify the coloring process and answer your questions in the first of two Color Commentary panels this weekend, moderator Greg Matiasevich (Multiversity Comics) is joined by colorists LAURA MARTIN, MATT WEBB, KELLY FITZPATRICK, MATT WILSON, and MARISSA LOUISE!

Colorists are among the unsung heroes of the comics industry, and you'll learn why after listening to this episode!

Almost a year and a half after their first conversation, Greg Rucka is back to talk with our Greg about his current workload. Rucka talks about the perils of working on a bi-weekly book, the importance of pauses in his work, the deep geekdom that forged him, collaboration as the key to success, what missteps he sought to avoid from his prior "Wonder Woman" run, whether DC Rebirth was as much of a course correction for his relationship with the company as it was for the character he was writing, and more on this week's episode!

In May 1978, 44 comics professionals (ranging from Frank Miller to Jim Shooter, Paul Levitz to Steve Ditko) gathered at Neal Adams' Continuity Studios in order to form a more perfect comics union. The seeds of that meeting would blossom almost forty years later into...nothing. If the brightest light casts the darkest shadow, then novelist Alex Segura made the perfect choice in setting his Pete Fernandez series of mystery novels in Miami. And if his name seems familiar, it should be to anyone listening to this show or checking out Multiversity Comics on a regular basis: Segura is not only the "PR guy" for Archie Comics, he also edits their Dark Circle line of titles as well as writing a few from time to time. But today's interview focuses on those mystery novels, the third of which ("Dangerous Ends") hit bookstores earlier this week. Greg finds out how Alex handles having to hit certain genre expectations while still finding something personal to say in his work, the benefits of writing more than one book at a time, some advice for how to promote your work without turning people off, and just what "Noir at the Bar" entails. All that and more on this week's episode!

A planet-killing asteroid heading straight for Earth may seem like The End of Life As We Know It, but it's just the starting point for Lion Forge's Catalyst Prime line of superhero titles. Senior editor Joseph Phillip Illidge makes a quick return to the underground recording studio to lay out just what he and his hand-picked team of creators (including Alex Di Campi, David F. Walker, Amy Chu, Joe Casey, and more) have up their sleeves to save us from a fate even worse than armageddon: boring comics. He talks about the Catalyst Prime 2017 rollout, what his thoughts and goals are for the line in general, and how having the opportunity to tell these kinds of stories for today's readers is a full-circle milestone in his comics career.

Dave Chisholm may not have been in the comics industry long enough to achieve the 'rock star' status of someone like Jim Lee or Paul Pope, but in terms of creating both comics AND music, he's a band apart from just about every other creator out there. Because when you write and draw your own graphic novel ("Instrumental" from Z2 Comics in May), compose/perform a companion soundtrack to be released simultaneously WITH that graphic novel, AND have another full-length album of music from the band you front being released around the same time (Talking Under Water self-titled debut album on April 28th) . . . what other label is there? Decide for yourself after listening to this interview, where Greg talks with Dave about process both musical and sequential, the difficulty of getting the essence of sound across a silent medium, and more. Where else could you hear talk about Frank Quitely, Kevin Nowlan, and Brian Eno in the same discussion?

And if that wasn't enough, you can hear of clips "Celebration" and "Death and the Narrator" (from "Instrumental"'s upcoming score) in the episode itself, PLUS the full "Celebration" track from the Multiversity Comics episode post page!

BONUS: Here are the two other non-"Instrumental" pieces of music mentioned in the episode:

"Tossing and Turning" from the Tossing and Turning EP by Talking Under Water

"Calligraphy" from Calligraphy by Dave Chisholm

The 'Blood is back, and Chad Bowers is the man planning the return of Image's first superteam in May! Greg got a chance to sit down with one of comicdom's foremost experts on 1992 to find out just what kind of Youngblood fans could expect with this incarnation. Could it be the ahead-of-its-time Liefeld original? The Teen Titans-influenced Moore revamp? The super-media-savvy Casey run? Or D, something completely different? Chad talks about working on a book with such an interesting pedigree, what type of boss Liefeld is when it comes to his own creations, his give&take with artist Jim Towe, plus a peek at another book coming up on the horizon for him and some old collaborators. Everything old is new again on today's episode!

Two different comics conversations on today's episode! First up, the creative team of the upcoming Image OGN "Afar": artist Kit Seaton and writer Leila del Duca. If one of those names sounds familiar, it's because del Duca is also the artist on "Shutter" with writer Joe Keatinge and is making her writing debut with this book. Seaton is the lower-profile of the two right now, but once fans get a look at "Afar", the SCAD professor will be a name one everyone's mind. Greg talked to the duo about their science-fiction story, the difficulties in maintaining the balance between strange and relate-able, influences, work processes, and just what to do when someone jimmies the lock on your bedroom door with a steak knife in the middle of the night.

Following that is a chat with comics-multihyphenate Christina Blanch. Between her work as a retailer (Aw Yeah Muncie), writer ("The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood"), educator (Super MOOC), and panel moderator, Blanch has spent a life firmly and unapologetically rooted in pop culture. Like her interests, the conversation covers a lot of ground, including what it's like being a retailer in today's comics market, the differences between stocking an LCS and setting a syllabus, the connection between Dr. Indiana Jones and Dr. Christina Blanch, surviving 2016, and what we can already do to make 2017 better.

This week Mike welcomes cartoonist Josh Bayer to the show to discuss "All Time Comics," the new, shared universe superhero line from Fantagraphics. To bring these books to life, Josh and his brother Samuel looked to an amalgamation of classic and modern comics talent. Folks like Herb Trimpe, Al Milgrom, Ben Marra, Noah Van Sciver, and Rick Buckler came together for this, collaborating in unexpected ways to make some unexpected comics. Josh talks about his thoughts on blending artists from different generations, explains why it's not as new of an idea as one might think, and shares his vast knowledge of comics in general. "All Time Comics: Crime Destroyer #1" is available for pre-order now, and will be hitting the shelves of all respectable comic shops in March.
