A planet-killing asteroid heading straight for Earth may seem like The End of Life As We Know It, but it's just the starting point for Lion Forge's Catalyst Prime line of superhero titles. Senior editor Joseph Phillip Illidge makes a quick return to the underground recording studio to lay out just what he and his hand-picked team of creators (including Alex Di Campi, David F. Walker, Amy Chu, Joe Casey, and more) have up their sleeves to save us from a fate even worse than armageddon: boring comics. He talks about the Catalyst Prime 2017 rollout, what his thoughts and goals are for the line in general, and how having the opportunity to tell these kinds of stories for today's readers is a full-circle milestone in his comics career.

Dave Chisholm may not have been in the comics industry long enough to achieve the 'rock star' status of someone like Jim Lee or Paul Pope, but in terms of creating both comics AND music, he's a band apart from just about every other creator out there. Because when you write and draw your own graphic novel ("Instrumental" from Z2 Comics in May), compose/perform a companion soundtrack to be released simultaneously WITH that graphic novel, AND have another full-length album of music from the band you front being released around the same time (Talking Under Water self-titled debut album on April 28th) . . . what other label is there? Decide for yourself after listening to this interview, where Greg talks with Dave about process both musical and sequential, the difficulty of getting the essence of sound across a silent medium, and more. Where else could you hear talk about Frank Quitely, Kevin Nowlan, and Brian Eno in the same discussion?

And if that wasn't enough, you can hear of clips "Celebration" and "Death and the Narrator" (from "Instrumental"'s upcoming score) in the episode itself, PLUS the full "Celebration" track from the Multiversity Comics episode post page!

BONUS: Here are the two other non-"Instrumental" pieces of music mentioned in the episode:

"Tossing and Turning" from the Tossing and Turning EP by Talking Under Water

"Calligraphy" from Calligraphy by Dave Chisholm

The 'Blood is back, and Chad Bowers is the man planning the return of Image's first superteam in May! Greg got a chance to sit down with one of comicdom's foremost experts on 1992 to find out just what kind of Youngblood fans could expect with this incarnation. Could it be the ahead-of-its-time Liefeld original? The Teen Titans-influenced Moore revamp? The super-media-savvy Casey run? Or D, something completely different? Chad talks about working on a book with such an interesting pedigree, what type of boss Liefeld is when it comes to his own creations, his give&take with artist Jim Towe, plus a peek at another book coming up on the horizon for him and some old collaborators. Everything old is new again on today's episode!

When was the last convention you went to where beer-related art accidents were a hazard to consider? Who was the artist 'get' of the show? All that, plus the differences in original art ideology on either side of the Atlantic, the many medias of Mark Buckingham, Rick Veitch tremor meeting Dave Gibbons sheen, recapturing comic shop wonder, solving distribution woes, and much more on today's episode!

Two different comics conversations on today's episode! First up, the creative team of the upcoming Image OGN "Afar": artist Kit Seaton and writer Leila del Duca. If one of those names sounds familiar, it's because del Duca is also the artist on "Shutter" with writer Joe Keatinge and is making her writing debut with this book. Seaton is the lower-profile of the two right now, but once fans get a look at "Afar", the SCAD professor will be a name one everyone's mind. Greg talked to the duo about their science-fiction story, the difficulties in maintaining the balance between strange and relate-able, influences, work processes, and just what to do when someone jimmies the lock on your bedroom door with a steak knife in the middle of the night.

Following that is a chat with comics-multihyphenate Christina Blanch. Between her work as a retailer (Aw Yeah Muncie), writer ("The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood"), educator (Super MOOC), and panel moderator, Blanch has spent a life firmly and unapologetically rooted in pop culture. Like her interests, the conversation covers a lot of ground, including what it's like being a retailer in today's comics market, the differences between stocking an LCS and setting a syllabus, the connection between Dr. Indiana Jones and Dr. Christina Blanch, surviving 2016, and what we can already do to make 2017 better.

This week Mike welcomes cartoonist Josh Bayer to the show to discuss "All Time Comics," the new, shared universe superhero line from Fantagraphics. To bring these books to life, Josh and his brother Samuel looked to an amalgamation of classic and modern comics talent. Folks like Herb Trimpe, Al Milgrom, Ben Marra, Noah Van Sciver, and Rick Buckler came together for this, collaborating in unexpected ways to make some unexpected comics. Josh talks about his thoughts on blending artists from different generations, explains why it's not as new of an idea as one might think, and shares his vast knowledge of comics in general. "All Time Comics: Crime Destroyer #1" is available for pre-order now, and will be hitting the shelves of all respectable comic shops in March.

As promised, John Arcudi returns for part two of his talk with Mike, this time turning his attention to his "B.P.R.D." run. It's been twelve years and 122 issues (by our count) since John joined Mike Mignola on the title, which isn't really something you see in comics anymore. There's talk of character creation and death, the concept of cycles, not letting attachments derail the narrative and so much more. John provides a lot of insight into his tenure on the series, and we thank him for being so generous with his time.

If you missed the first part of the conversation, it's episode 346 in the feed.

For today's episode we welcome writer John Arcudi back to the show! Next week will see the release of John's final issue of "B.P.R.D," which comes after a dozen years of writing the title. With such a long stretch of work behind him, we figured now would be the perfect time to invite him back on the show for a look back at how we got here. This is a conversation in two parts, with this episode focusing on John's work outside of the Mignolaverse. From "Doom Partol" to "Major Bummer" and "A God Somewhere," John's written an incredible amount of comics and has worked at just about every major publisher. We even get into his non-writing comics work as an editor and archivist, as well as his earliest published works.

If you missed John the last time he was on, you can catch that one right here. And don't forget to come back next week for part 2 of the conversation when we devote the entire episode to John's "B.P.R.D." conclusion!

Balanced somewhere between the keen insight of scholarly publishing and the best LCS discussions you ever had is the output of the Sequart Organization. Since 2005, Sequart has given readers & viewers a look at comics and comics culture that can satisfy those new to the medium and everyone else who've been here all along. From documentaries on Neil Gaiman, the creation of Image Comics, and the underrated contribution of women throughout the history of comics, to critical books covering such topics as Watchmen, Casanova, the Legion of Super-Heroes, Chris Claremont's entire X-run, and Grant Morrison, to a daily-updated blog, Sequart is serious about bringing real comics criticism to the masses. Greg sits down with Editor-in-Chief Mike Phillips to talk about Sequart's past, present, and future.

Greg recently came across this unaired 2013 interview with "March" co-writer Andrew Aydin, recorded at that year's Small Press Expo, and decided with the recent release of not only the third and final volume of the trilogy in August, but also the complete trilogy slipcase last month, this was still timely and too much fun of a talk to leave in the RFT vaults deep in the center of the earth. So while Aydin, artist Nate Powell, and co-writer/subject Congressman John Lewis make one last trip around the talk show/media circuit in promotion and praise for their award-winning efforts, sit back and listen to Greg chatting with the first-time comics author at the very start of that journey.

This week Mike welcomes cartoonist Matthew Allison to the show! Matthew's kicking off a new four-issue series of his self-published series "Cankor," so we certainly wanted to have the man himself swing by to talk about it. There are some new elements to the new issue that really caught Mike's attention: one anyone can see, and another that you'll need to get a little navel-gazey for. There's plenty of "Cankor" discussion as well as some gereral comics talk and a bit of shared love for the Artists' Edition format.

"Cankor" is now available from Matthew's website, as well as at a number of shops around the country.

With Multiversity Comics heading into the home stretch of its 40 Days of Supergirl celebration, Greg decided it would be neat to have a little Supergirl discussion in conjunction with that. But with Mike unavailable, Greg turned to friend of the show Paul Lai (from the excellent podcast The Paul List) to come on and give the episode his specific brand of considered and researched opinion. The duo focus on the Maid of Steel's origins and the era in which she sprung from the Kryptonian rocket ship, but the conversation manages to touch on other parts of her career, from Crisis to DC Rebirth, and appearances in other media as well. All that and more awaits you in this week's episode!

It's after Labor Day and with the summer of 2016 now officially over, it's time for students young and not-quite-as-young to head out of the pool and back to the classroom. This transition is no different for artists, but for those living in the Baltimore area, a new alternative to the traditional art education institutions is emerging. Greg had a chance to chat with Baltimore Academy of Illustration instructor Greg Houston about his school's mission to bring high-quality illustration instruction to a student body that may not be best served by the traditional structure (or tuition requirements) of a 3- or 4-year institution.

Along with artist Nick Dyer, Emma is working on the latest installment of "Anderson, Psi-Division," Which is her second crack at one of the magazine's highest profile characters. How exactly did she come to write Anderson? What are the tricks to dialoguing a conversation between psychics? Emma gets into all of that, as well as some of her other works like "Survival Geeks" and "The Alienist."

Programming note: we'll finish up our dive into the Previews catalog next week. We'll also probably spend more time talking about Marvel than we usually do.

With the August 24th release of Twomorrows' newest comics book "Comic Book Fever", Greg got a chance to chat with writer George Khoury about this love letter to the comics and comics culture of his youth. From his survey of British art talent in “True Brit”, to his benchmark work untangling the Miracleman legacy and legal history in “Kimota! The Miracleman Companion”, to his extensive interview and contextualization of one of comics’ greatest creators in “The Extraordinary Works of Alan Moore”, Khoury has proven himself as one of the pillars of the Twomorrows publishing line and a must-read when it comes to understanding and celebrating the medium we all enjoy. Nowhere is that combination more evident than in "Fever”.

Celebrating the last decade of the Bronze Age, “Fever” touches on so many aspects of comics and comics culture from 1976 to 1986, that if you were a comics fan from that era and DIDN’T see something you recognized and remembered fondly...maybe you weren’t actually a fan.

He and Greg talk about not only his books, but also which DC artist was a spitting image of Mean Streets-era Martin Scorsese, how likely we are to see an updated volume of "Kimota!", why people shouldn't be surprised when poking the bear doesn't put the bear in the best mood, and more on this laidback, free-wheeling episode!

This week's episode kicks off with a simple request: pick a number. It's a lottery of sorts for Mike and Greg as random comics are plucked from their places and used as kindling for conversation. Dark Reign-era Marvel, Mike's least favorite "Hellboy" arc, and a deep dive into Ashley Wood's storytelling decisions are just a few topics that're touched on in this wide-ranging free for all! Also, keep this image handy for later reference.

A co-host’s comment and an EiC’s panel answer spark this week’s discussion on tackling the comic reader’s eternal dilemma: “How can I make time to enjoy the comics I already have when I keep buying more each week?” Unstoppable forces and immovable objects collide as the lads discuss not only quantities of comics but quality of reading as well. When was the last time you got to savor a book? Really look at and absorb for more than two seconds that page an artist worked a whole day creating? But with the market as it stands, and deserving creators needing every single customer to keep their books afloat, is dropping New Comic Day cold turkey really the answer? And what is your definition of ‘deserving’? All those questions and more posed, pondered, and maybe even answered on this week’s episode!

After tackling the Green section last week, Mike and Greg turn their full attention to the front half of the Previews catalog for September 2016. Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, IDW… they may be deemed Premier publishers by Diamond, but are they bringing the goods this month? Will DC’s Gerard Way-headed “Doom Patrol” title be the breakout hit Young Animal needs? Where are the gotta-have-them-NOW books that used the set Image apart from the pack? Standing behind the astronauts, maybe? And is Civil War II the next event giving Marvel momentum at the cost of a burnt-out readership? It's not all gloom and (Doctor) Doom, but talk gets real about what it means to be following Big Two books in 2016 on the second half of the July 2016 Previews double-header!

This week brings a conversation between two of the most important and influential comics artists of the last half-century: Neal Adams and Bill Sienkiewicz. Greg recently had the opportunity to "moderate" a panel featuring the pair (their first solo panel together), but as you can imagine when Neal gets behind a microphone, it quickly developed a life of its own. Both creators shared stories, insight, and surprises from their decades-spanning careers in comics. A more tightly packed hour of comics conversation you would be hard-pressed to find, so tune in and enjoy this panel from last month's HeroesCon.

Our month-long look at Dark Horse Comics continues, both over at Multiversity Comics and here on this show with today's overview of the publisher’s various anthology offerings. Yes, we’ve all heard of “Dark Horse Presents”...but what about “Mayhem”? Or “Deadline USA”? Or “Cheval Noir”? The lads dig deep on this one to give credit where credit is due for Dark Horse’s commitment to delivering many different kinds of comics in single-issue packages. Why was there no manga anthology? Who was Toren Smith? What made Dark Horse Comics publish “Dark Horse Comics”? Which Alan Moore collaborator did Greg think made an appearance in ‘Sin City’ during its initial serialization in “DHP”? When did Ed Brubaker share shelf space with… Dr. Giggles? How did ‘The Masque’ wind up with a spelling change and a new lease on life? The answers to all those questions and more on today’s episode!

Dark Horse Month continues at Multiversity and here on the show, as the lads welcome writer Samuel Teer to the underground recording studio for some talk about his debut Dark Horse OGN “VEDA: Assembly Required” with Hyeondo Park and Kelly Fitzpatrick. The story of a young orphan girl growing up in an automated factory drew inspiration from sources as varied as Pixar and Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”, but this comic for all ages certainly brings its own virtues to bear. Teer talks about the process of getting the book to Dark Horse and what happened after its own assembly. What's it like for a first-time writer to have their debut OGN released by a major publisher? What went right...or wrong? Gremlins feature prominently in “VEDA” the story, but did Teer and company escape their shenanigans completely? Find out all that and more on this week’s episode!

The lads celebrate 300 episodes by finally talking about a creator never before mentioned on the show: Mike Mignola! All kidding aside, this episode finds Mike & Greg in immediate post-”Hellboy in Hell” #10 territory, as the final issue hit stands mere hours before the tape started rolling. After 23 years and 66 issues in various iterations, Mignola brings his story of a demon raised as a man to a close, possibly forever. Mike & Greg talk about not only what happens in the last installment, but preface that deep-dive with a healthy back&forth of Mignola's work & career in general. What is it about his work that invites so much discussion? How have the years honed the Mignola/Stewart collaboration? When did Hellboy first zig where every one of his imitators zag, and which direction did that point to Mignola’s creative voice going? All that and more, plus Greg’s final answer on the “curve” Mignola vs “straight” Mignola debate, as Robots From Tomorrow celebrates its 300th episode!

And are you prepared for the questions, comments, and fallout of your choices? You might be with this crowd a while, so getting off on the right foot is important. Find out where he & Mike draw their particular lines!

Then it's off to the iPads for some Marvel Unlimited back-issue bin rummaging! Leading out of a request by fellow MCer Matthew Garcia, the lads come up with some off-the-cuff recommendations and cover art critiques. Plus Jim Lee faces off against John Byrne with Mark Chiarello waiting in the wings, Humberto Ramos spins many a Spider-Man cover, and Greg carpet F-bombs the work of one particular Marvel cover artist. Four issues into a five-issue story, Ted McKeever’s “Pencil Head” sprinkles surrealist happenings on top of a barely disguised look at McKeever’s journey through the mainstream American comics industry from 1990 to 2004(ish). Names are fudged to placate the lawyers, but you don’t need a crystal ball to see the obvious on this one (Crank Filler? Schmal Plevitz?). But even so, picking out ALL the references can be tricky. But luckily, Greg’s area of expertise is just that era of comics, so listen to he & Mike walk you through the ins & outs of this sharp-witted ‘bande desinee a clef’. Afterwards, the focus shifts to over to manga, as Mike digs into a Japanese print copy of “Weekly Shonen Jump.” How different is it from what we get digitally in the US? What cultural similarities and differences do the two comics bring to mind? All that, plus the name of the Silver Age artist banned from Marvel offices for nocturnal activities and much, much more on this episode!

With Mike on assignment this week, Greg taps Multiversity Comics editor & frequent RFT guest Brian Salvatore to sit in on this week's episode, taking a look at the recent Eisner Award 2016 nominations. But while most of the internet chatter has been about the nominees, Greg & Brian aim this discussion at a slightly wider angle: do the 2016 Eisner categories really reflect where comics find themselves in 2016? Starting with a peek behind the proverbial curtain for Multiversity's own "Year in Review" criteria & goals, the talk goes wider to the North American comics awards landscape: Eisners, Harveys, and Ignatz. Find out which company had a stranglehold on the "Best Editor" Eisner for its entire run, what awards were given during the 1970s, why we don't give out Kirby Awards, and how to solve a problem like contradictory categories. All that, plus a proposal for the Kim Thompson Award and more on today's episode!
